If there is one thing I do appreciate about winter – especially in the UK, where snow may as well be a kind of mythical creature as likely as it is to show up at your doorstep -it would be how beautiful everything becomes when the world becomes all frosty. Especially at the moment, when I seem to be going through a true magpie phase in my life; I obsess over all things shiny. And frost, well, frost is the shiniest of all.
I know, I know, I have been complaining about winter and my winter snuffles. I know. This year’s one was long and cold, and tiring and I am still not sure if I will make it to spring in one piece. But as I was taking some photos of the frosty landscapes, early in the morning, with the sun barely over the horizon and the sky a lovely shade of baby pink… I realized that winter can be sometimes just that – a thing of beauty.
I wish the cold never bothered me anyway – then I could spend my entire life surrounded by frosty flowers and leaves and grass, and be perfectly happy amongst all its glittering. For now, all I have left is a little dawn here or there, on the days I feel brave enough to roll out of bed before the air temperature hits zero, and a promise that one day things will not only be prettier but also just better.
What are your favourite places to see in the winter? Any scenic routes around where you live?
